The husband of her rival is making some bold claims about “race fixing.”

According to a New York Daily News report, there is a controversy brewing in Norway involving nine-time New York City Marathon champion Grete Waitz.

Arve Kristiansen, the husband of 1989 Champion Ingrid Kristiansen (also a Norwegian runner), is claiming that his wife was left off the invite list to many New York City races in order to assure Waitz of success.

He calls this alleged move “worse than doping.”

The New York Road Runners (NYRR) are having none of this and deny such “race fixing” occurred.

“Ingrid was invited many times to the New York City Marathon with all of the other great runners of that time,” the organization said in a statement. “The New York City Marathon has always been an inclusive and welcoming event and we continue to work to expand access to this great race.”

Waitz passed away in 2011.
